Let me let you in on a little secret: Vegas grew up. Sure, the slots still ding and the buffets are still legendary, but today Las Vegas is one of the most polished luxury destinations in the country. Think world-class dining, jaw-dropping shows, championship golf and some of the most stunning desert scenery in the West, all a short drive from the Strip.

I'll admit I'm a little biased. Between the golf, the slots and the shows, Vegas is one of my favorite places to send clients, and to go myself. Milestone birthday, couples' getaway, guys' golf trip or family adventure, Vegas can be whatever you want it to be. The trick is knowing how to plan it, and that's where I come in.

Your hotel sets the tone for the whole trip, and in Vegas the options range from "nice" to "wait, is this real?" Here's how I think about it:

• Classic Strip luxury: Bellagio, Wynn and Encore, as well as the Cosmopolitan put you right in the middle of the action, with signature spas, pools and restaurants under one roof.
• Quiet, non-gaming retreats: Hotels like the Waldorf Astoria skip the casino floor entirely. Perfect for couples, or anyone who wants five-star calm after a long night out.
• Suites and villas: For groups and big celebrations, a multi-bedroom suite or private villa often costs less per person than a handful of standard rooms, and everyone gets to feel like a high roller.

Here's the part most people miss: the room you book matters as much as the resort. Fountain views, high floors and newer towers can change the whole experience, and those are exactly the details I know to ask for.

Dining. Vegas quietly became one of America's great food cities. Celebrity-chef steakhouses, omakase counters, French tasting menus and brunches worth setting an alarm for all sit side by side. The best tables book up weeks ahead, so I like to lock them in early.

Entertainment. Cirque du Soleil, headlining residencies, immersive shows at the Sphere (this week is Metallica): there's something world-class on stage every single night. Add a game, a comedy club or a rooftop lounge and your evening is handled.

Golf. This one is close to my heart. With sunshine most of the year, Vegas is a serious golf town, with championship courses minutes from the Strip. Some of the most exclusive ones are open only to guests of certain resorts, which is worth knowing before you book.

Beyond the Strip. Some of the best memories happen nowhere near a slot machine:

• Red Rock Canyon: Hiking and scenic drives about 30 minutes away.
• Valley of Fire State Park: Fiery red sandstone about an hour out. Yes, the name is earned.
• Hoover Dam: An easy half-day trip and a genuine engineering marvel.
• Grand Canyon: Reachable by helicopter tour, for the splurge you'll talk about for years.

Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) bring the most comfortable weather for pools, golf and hiking. Summer is hot, no sugarcoating it, but it often brings great hotel value. December means holiday sparkle and huge New Year's Eve celebrations. One pro tip: prices can jump sharply during major conventions and sporting events, so smart date picking can save you real money.
